October Birthstone: Opal Types, Jewelry & Care

October birthstone Opal guide

What is October’s birthstone? October has two birthstones; this guide follows OOAKB’s opal collection. Other recognized October options include tourmaline. This page keeps the commercial path aligned with OOAKB’s Opal parent collection.

What does opal mean?

Opal has been prized for shifting spectral colors known as play-of-color. Not every opal shows this phenomenon, and body color alone does not identify type or origin.

Meaning versus fact: hope, creativity and individuality are cultural or personal associations—not proven medical, financial, psychological or spiritual effects. A gift can carry symbolism without promising a result.

Treatment and identity: Opal may be impregnated, dyed, smoked or assembled as a doublet or triplet. Product images cannot establish solid opal, origin or treatment.

No OOAKB item is labelled with a mine, natural origin, treatment or certification in this guide unless the individual product record supports it.

How to choose opal jewelry

1. Start with the product disclosure

Confirm gemstone identity, natural or lab-created status, treatment, metal and measurements on the individual listing.

2. Judge appearance in normal light

Choose color, clarity and finish you enjoy. Trade names and letter grades are not universal quality standards.

3. Match the design to wear

Rings receive more knocks than earrings or pendants. Check exposed corners, setting height, prongs and fit.

4. Ask when evidence matters

Origin, treatment and certification should be supported in writing—not inferred from a photograph or title.

Which jewelry style should you choose?

Pendant or necklace

Best for: An easy visible focal point and the broadest gifting path.

Check: Chain length and pendant dimensions.

Ring

Best for: A more size-sensitive or statement-focused choice.

Check: Size, setting height and exposed edges.

Stud or drop earrings

Best for: A gift when ring size and necklace length are unknown.

Check: Post or hook preference, scale and movement.

Bracelet

Best for: Stacking, stations or bead-led texture.

Check: Wrist fit, clasp and contact with a watch.

How to care for opal jewelry

  • Use warm, soapy water and a soft cloth or brush.
  • Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaning.
  • Avoid high heat and sudden temperature changes.
  • Do not soak doublets or triplets; prolonged water exposure may weaken adhesive.

Frequently asked questions

Is opal the only October birthstone?

No. October is also associated with tourmaline. The OOAKB product path shown here focuses on opal.

Can opal be worn every day?

That depends on hardness, toughness, treatment, setting and activity. 5–6.5 Mohs describes scratch resistance, not immunity to chips, impact or surface damage.

Does a darker or more vivid color always mean better quality?

No single rule covers value. Color preference, evenness, clarity, cut, size, treatment and verified identity all matter.

How do I know whether the material is natural or treated?

Do not rely on a photograph. Ask for written disclosure and, when the distinction materially affects the purchase, a suitable independent laboratory report.

Does opal provide healing, luck or protection?

Those are traditions or personal beliefs, not proven effects. Jewelry should not replace professional care or be sold with guaranteed outcomes.

Sources & review note

Gem facts and care guidance reviewed against the GIA October birthstone guide and GIA opal care guidance. Product examples were checked against OOAKB’s public October collection on August 25, 2026.

Editorial standard: separate belief from measurable gem properties and never infer identity, origin, treatment, mine, metal or certification from an image or title.
